A World of Cities

Welcome to A World of Cities, a new webcomic set in the world of Urbis!

Why did I decide to create a new webcomic? Well, for several reasons:

1. I recently bought a graphics tablet and wanted to practice regularly with it.

I quite enjoyed drawing when I was still in school. I wasn't exactly at the top of my art class, but I wasn't bad, either. Still, that was more than ten years ago (yes, I am that old), and I haven't tried to draw anything since. Drawing always seemed to involve a lot of work to get right, and I didn't have a good place in my apartment to work on it, either.

Then, two weeks ago, I impulse-bought a graphics tablet, and I was hooked ever since. Using a graphics tablet was much, much faster than conventional drawing (or at least, that's what it seemed to me) - and much less frustrating, since you could quickly undo any bad strokes of the pen. And after some practicing, I decided that a webcomic would be a great excuse to continue practicing this further. This first strip was done only three days after I bought the tablet, and at shows - but of course, I do hope I will get better at it over time...

2. I wanted to expand on Urbis.

Urbis is a fantasy world I have been working on for more than three years now. It started out as an intellectual exercise - what would a fantasy world really look like if the magic and creatures of the Dungeons & Dragons RPG really existed? From this it gradually developed into a large world full of huge city-states currently going through a magical industrial revolution.

As of the time of this writing, more than 80,000 words have been written for this setting - all of them available online - and I plan to continue working on it until it is ready for professional publication. Of course, if this venture is going to be somewhat profitable, I can use as much publicity as I can - and this webcomic might be able to contribute to that, if it is successful on its own...

3. I want to publish Urbis as cheaply as possible

I am on a limited budget. Actually printing an RPG book costs lots of money - money which I don't have. Fortunately, these days it is possible to publish RPG books in PDF format and sell them. At present, I can do most of the work in creating such an ebook myself, with one exception:

Art.

Art costs money, especially good art. Money I don't really have at the moment. But if I keep on practicing my art for this webcomic, then maybe one day I will be good enough to produce something worthy of inclusion in a professional publication.

And if not... well, at least there is the chance of getting into contact with lots of great artists here on ComicGenesis... ;)
